I studied industrial design. What pushed me into engineering was plain frustration: I could design something I wanted to exist, then had to hand it off and hope it came back the way I'd imagined. It usually didn't. So I started building things myself — frontend first, then backend, then the servers underneath, once I rented a VPS and had to figure out how to keep it running.
